Home Tuition Scotland Standard Grade Music tuition, Intermediate Music tuition, Higher Music tuition, and Advanced Higher Music tuition elements are:

• Solo Performing
• Group Performing
• Inventing
• Listening.

The emphasis in each of these elements is on practical musical activity. The dual assessment in Performing gives that element an emphasis which reflects the views expressed in submissions received from Standard Grade Music tutors, Intermediate Music tutors, Higher Music tutors, and Advanced Higher Music tutors.

Standard Grade Music lessons, Intermediate Music lessons, Higher Music lessons, and Advanced Higher Music lessons in each of these elements encourage pupils to reach their highest level of attainment: there will be no barriers placed in the way of pupils able to demonstrate high degrees of skill and musicianship. A particular assessment feature of Performing is the designation of overlapping task content levels and overlapping levels of achievement.

On the Certificate for Standard Grade Music exams, Intermediate Music exams, Higher Music exams, and Advanced Higher Music exams a profile of attainment in each of the elements will be provided. Solo Performing will be externally assessed by Visiting Examiner; Group Performing and Inventing will be internally assessed with external moderation; Listening will be assessed by external examination. The grades for the elements will be aggregated to provide the overall award which will also appear on the Certificate.

Centres' internal assessments will be moderated by the Board to ensure conformity with national standards and with the requirements set out in this document.
